Master in Clinical Research Program
Launch of a novel Master’s degree program by Dresden International University including the Principles and Practice of Clinical Research course offered by Harvard Medical School
The Dresden International University (DIU) Master’s Program in Clinical Research is designed to provide leading-edge training in the methodology and practice of clinical research and will be launched in February 2014. The core component of the Master’s Program in Clinical Research is the Principles and Practice of Clinical Research (PPCR) course which is a collaborative distance-learning training program provided by Harvard Medical School, Department of Continuing Education. The Master’s Program is open to applicants from Dresden, Boston and from all over the world. Upon graduation, students receive the title Master of Science (MSc) from DIU as well as the PPCR course certificate from Harvard Medical School.
Principles and Practice of Clinical Research (PPCR) is a highly innovative learning program that has been designed at Harvard Medical School and aims to provide excellent training in medical research and create an international network of clinical scientists. At Carl Gustav Carus University Hospital the the first German PPCR site center has been established in 2012. The PPCR course uses various novel web 2.0 based tools of learning to create excellent conditions for collaborative and long-distance learning. These learning tools include weekly 3-hours interactive live lectures using cutting-edge video conferencing technology, an online discussion forum, optional sessions through chat and video conference, case based learning, regular assignments and multiple choice tests as well as interactive learning software and intensive work shops and group projects. The PPCR lecturers are faculty from Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health as well as editors from the New England Journal of Medicine. Also, PPCR provides very individual training as its team consists of more than 20 faculty members from Harvard and more than 30 teaching assistants.
The DIU Master in Clinical Research integrates the PPCR course into a two year program which upon successful completion grants its graduates the academic title Master of Science (M.Sc.). This Master’s program includes the PPCR course as well as three intensive on-site workshops on the topics
1.) Scientific Presentation,
2.) Economical Aspects of Clinical Research and Clinical Pharmacological Trials, and
3.) Applied Statistical Analysis as well as a Master thesis which can be a scientific publication provided requirements of equivalence are met.
“This multi-modal, international and collaborative concept constitutes the future of scientific learning and provides the unique opportunity to create a global network of clinical researchers” say Dr. Siepmann and Dr. Illigens, PPCR Dresden Site Directors and DIU Master in Clinical Research Program Directors.
Applications must be submitted through the online application systems of:
1.) PPCR at www.ppcr.hms.harvard.edu
(Dresden students must choose the Dresden-DIU-PPCR-Master’s program option) and subsequently through
2.) DIU at http://www.di-uni.de/index.php?id=568
Application deadline is January 30st, 2014

The basic principle of both the PPCR course and the Master’s program is the idea of collaborative learning: “There is no right or wrong”- our aim is not just to teach facts but to learn together and to develop novel ways of learning in a highly interactive setting.
